DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

Introduction
The department of health has been striving to promote a healthy society through a network of facilities and services. The Directorate of Health FATA is headed by a director who manages the health services through his representative head of department in each agency. The directorate plans, executes, operates and maintains agency/tehsil head quarter hospitals, rural health centres, basic health units, dispensaries, clinics and health centres. The health department has a major responsibility in providing basic health services to people, preventing spread of diseases, ensuring healthy and safe environment, products, eating habits and safe food, safety and security in maternal and child health and encouraging community in participation in health services.

Strengths and Opportunities in the Sector

  • The community is already organized under tribal and clan affiliations and a regular system exists for accessing the community.

  • The forum of the jirga facilitates the sharing of ideas and solving problems.

  • The area has relatively clean environment and is free from pollution. There are strong social support mechanisms already in place (clan loyalty).

  • There is a growing awareness of health care and vocalization of health needs is at forefront in public gatherings.

Development Strategy

  • Focus on the human resources in the area and provide opportunities for development of local human resources. This will be done through establishing paramedical schools and a medical college for the area.

  • Another important element of this strategy is empowering the community to take actions for health. Knowledge is a vital tool in enabling the individuals, households, and communities.

  • A vital link in service availability is the information base. If requisite information is not available, planning and resource allocation cannot be done, to ensure that service will be available when and where it is required. The HMIS will not only provide inputs in the policy formulation processes but also assist in monitoring and evaluation of ongoing programs and projects.

  • Effective institutions are required to steer interventions. The capacity to implement is based on the necessary technical skills and support available at these institutions.

  • Another important concept in this strategy is the concept of public private partnerships for health which will be a change in the role of government in the health sector. Another area which requires attention is the economic uplift of the population
