Introduction
The Directorate of Irrigation has been involved in developing and managing
surface and ground water resources as well as undertaking flood mitigation
measures. It is headed by a Director with his representative in each agency. The
main functions of the department is to utilize available water in an efficient
use for irrigation to achieve high intensity of irrigation, construct storage
reservoir at flood Nullahs for utilization of barren land for agriculture, tap
small to medium hydropower potential, explore ground water potential, and make
best use through dug wells/Tubewells for land beyond the command of perennial
source. Apart from this, the department manages the flood flows in rivers by
designing of flood protection work to protect land. The department has been
striving to introduce new technologies through promotion of high efficiency
system of irrigation like Drip and Sprinkle.
Strengths and Opportunities in Sector
-
The initiatives that have
been taken in sector have contributed considerably in promotion of
agricultural activities by providing more water and protecting productive
lands from erosion.
-
FATA has important rivers
namely Kurram, Tochi, Bara, Wana Toi, Mastora, Khaisora, Seiko Khawar Danish
Kool holding irrigation potential.
-
New irrigation techniques
like “drip Irrigation and sprinkling” introduced in FATA has shown very
encouraging results especially in Kurram Agency which need to be replicated on
a large scale in the other agencies.
-
The
irrigation, water management and power sector induces a multiplier impact on
the over all quality
of life of people.
-
Good irrigation networks
can make more water available for agriculture resulting in high yields and
immediate financial returns to farmers and families.
-
Efficient water management
makes available additional water for irrigation and contributes in recharging
the ground water for multiple uses.
-
The development of power
sector not only augments the existing electricity needs but also helps in
efficient management of water sources.
Development Strategy
-
Efficient water management,
both of source and infrastructure, to minimize water losses
-
Harnessing the seasonal
runoff to increase the water sources for irrigation
-
Scaling up of existing
efficient irrigation experiences within FATA
-
Harvesting the potential
surface water source for irrigation and power generation
-
Rehabilitation programme
for non-operational tube wells in areas having ground water potential
-
Conservation and recharge
of underground water sources to meet the future water needs
-
Requirement based
decision-making and financial resource allocation for the sector
-
Institutional
strengthening and technical capacity building of the Directorate and service
providers
